Woke up to a grey and overcast morning in whitianga after a night of crazy rain and wind. We set off early today for our journey to the next stop on our trip, Rotorua.
Halfway through our drive we stopped at Tauranga so we could check out the beach & hike to the top of Mount Maunganui. At 232 meters high it doesn’t seem too tricky, but it was definitely on the steep side! The views at the peak are amazing, you can see right across the beach and harbour and miles out to sea. After a much easier walk down the mountain, we had a paddle in the sea and then set off for Rotorua.
After checking in to our hostel (Astray Motel) we headed for the Redwoods at Whakarewarewa Forest. The redwood trees here were planted in 1901 and the tallest one in the forest is 72 meters high. It’s really breathtaking and makes you feel so tiny as they are all so huge! We did an hour trek through the forest and then headed back to Rotorua to have a wander round the town.
For dinner we had our first NZ Dominos pizza! At only $5 a pizza it’s crazy cheap, but nowhere near as tasty as back home…
