The day has finally arrived… today we went to Hobbiton! The movie set is just outside of Hamilton… literally in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by rolling green hills, trees, cows and LOTS of sheep. We got a coffee and a cheesy scone at the cafe and checked out the (crazy overpriced) merch at the gift shop.
You get taken on a mini bus into the main set and then led around on a tour of the whole of the shire. The attention to detail is mad and there are so many little hobbit houses and gardens! After taking lots of photos and having an explore of the village, you get to enjoy a nice cold beer at the Green Dragon Inn.
It was way better than I was expecting and well worth the money too. The dream birthday eve for Owen! After Hobbiton we headed to Taupo to check in to our hostel (Haka Lodge). Lake Taupo is ridiculously big, at 616 km sq it’s the biggest in New Zealand. On the opposite side of the lake you can see Mt. Ngauruhoe (mount doom!). We had a wander down to the town and the lake front to check out the boat tours and then headed back to the hostel to cook dinner. There’s some pretty annoying posh English girls who serenaded the kitchen with a rendition of les mis while we cooked which was really enjoyable. Not!
After dinner we headed back down to the lake front to take some pics of the sun setting over the mountains but didn’t stay down long as it got really cold!
