It’s our second day at Lake Taupo, and also Owen’s NZ birthday (as we are a day ahead!). We started our day with a gross cup of coffee at the hostel… it tasted like gravy powder, and then set off for a walk to Huka Falls. We parked at the thermal spring and did about 2 hour round trip to the falls. They really are amazing, the water is so blue and rushes past at about a hundred miles an hour. Apparently around 200,000 litres of water flows through every second! We had a swim in the Waikato River and then a dip in the thermal spring that feeds into it. It’s so warm in there, like a hot tub but with sand and rocks at the bottom.
On the way back to the hostel we stopped off at the Aratiatia dam. It gets released every few hours and you can watch the water from the lake flow through a rocky ravine into another lake below.
In the afternoon we went for a pint in the town and then spent the evening on a beer and pizza boat trip! It was such a good way to spend the evening, and for about 20 quid you get 4 beers, some pizza and a boat trip out to the Maori rock carvings (which are not ancient at all… they were completed in the 80’s!) and then back to the town. The weather was so nice too so it was the perfect way to celebrate Owens 26th! Afterwards We headed to another hostel near to ours for a jug of beer and a couple of games of pool and then headed home for the night.
