So we’ve finished our 6 week whistle-stop (it really was fast!) tour of NZ and I thought I’d put together my best bits of the trip. In all honesty, I think if we’d had an extra two weeks then it would have been ideal… although I think 6 weeks is the absolute minimum you can spend here as there’s just so much to see and do!
My fave places in the north island have to be Wellington & the Bay of Islands, although I really loved Auckland, and thought Taupo and the Coromandel were amazing too… see there’s just too much to choose from.
The nicest places we stayed in, in the North was probably the Beachfront Hotel in Napier, because of the hot tub! Adventure Bay Backpackers in the Bay of Islands was great because of the pool & tennis courts.
We ate far too much food in the North Island, but the best place has to be Burger Liquor in Wellington! The veggie burger there is unbeatable, I think anyway, and will be hard to top! We had great tacos at Vondel in Auckland, and the biggest bowl of noodles ever at Noodle Canteen in Taupo. The traditional Maori feast that we had at the Tamaki Village In Rotorua was amazing too.
As far as activities go, Hobbiton was actually really fun and definitely one of the best things to do in the north island! Newtown Festival in Wellington was a major highlight too, as was the incredible experience of volcanic activity at hot water beach and the hot springs in Lake Taupo.
As far as the South Island goes, I can’t really imagine going anywhere more amazing anywhere else in the world! The scenery is just incredible, and you never get tired of the mountainous views. I really loved the Abel Tasman National Park, and hiking to Roy’s Peak definitely made the trip extra special. Queenstown was such a buzzing city to spend a few days in, and seeing whales in Kaikoura really topped the whole trip off!
The craziest hostel that we stayed in definitely has to be Atlantis Backpackers in Picton – an experience to say the least! But Ivory Towers Lodge in Fox Glacier was great because it was an amazing room with a balcony and TV, perfect for being trapped in Cyclone Gita!
We ate so much amazing food in Queenstown, with Fergburger being a highlight! Mexicano’s in Christchurch had some amazing tacos, and I can’t even count how many cheap yet delicious cheese, ham & pineapple toasties we’ve had over the last 6 weeks…
Here’s a pin map to show (pretty much!) everywhere we’ve stopped on route
